Who We Are
Goochland-Powhatan Community Services offers Emergency Services twenty-four hours per day, every day.
Immediate services and crisis intervention and assessment for hospitalization are available 24 hours a day for persons experiencing a psychiatric crisis or at risk of needing hospitalization:
- In situations judged to be dangerous, you should always contact the Sheriff’s Department first (Dial 911)
- If someone is injured or seriously ill, seek medical attention before calling Emergency Services.
- Many emergency situations can be handled much more efficiently when calls are received during GPCS’s normal operating hours. After hours, fewer assistance resources are available.
- When needed, immediate face-to-face assessments will occur at our offices in Goochland and Powhatan during operating hours. After-hours assessments are done at the Sheriff’s Department.
Requests for Services:
- Emergency Services is also the “front door” for other mental health and substance abuse services. Non-emergency requests for services are accepted by telephone or on a walk-in basis during operating hours at the Goochland (804-556-5400) and Powhatan (804-598-2200) offices.
- A brief assessment will be conducted, requiring 20-30 minutes. Assessments are carried out by highly trained clinicians. If the situation is determined to be an emergency, a face-to-face session will be scheduled, usually the same day.
- Parents or legal guardians may request services for children. Other requests must be made by the person in need of services. Children do not have to have parental permission to request services.
- Subsequent treatment sessions may be with a therapist other than the clinician conducting the assessment
