Who We Are

Smyth County Department of Social Services provides emergency financial assistance to pay medical, utility, and rent expenses in emergencies for needy individuals. Service is subject to the availability of funds.  Energy Assistance can help with heating or cooling costs for income-eligible households. 

Auxiliary Grants are available for some individuals who live in an adult care residence or adult family care home. The money received is used by the person to pay for care provided by the home. Individuals who qualify for this program are also eligible for Medicaid.  General eligibility for an auxiliary grant is

  • Be 65 or older, blind or disabled
  • Have resources of less than $2,000 for one person or $3,000 for a couple 
  •  Have been assessed and decided care is needed in adult care residence or adult family placement
